The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) urges citizens who need to travel by road to check the weather forecast and road conditions before setting off, due to the orange and yellow warnings issued by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) for snow accumulations in various parts of Spain this Thursday.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the most adverse snowfall period will occur from midnight on Wednesday throughout Thursday in areas of the provinces of León, Asturias, Navarra, Huesca, and Lleida. However, it may also extend, with a yellow warning, to areas of Lugo, Cantabria, La Rioja, Granada, Soria, Zamora, Palencia, Segovia, and some neighbouring areas such as the mountains of Guadalajara and the Community of Madrid (Somosierra area).
The precipitation, they warn, may affect traffic not only on regional and local roads but also on high-capacity roads - motorways and highways - hence it is "essential to know the conditions before setting off on a journey."
In cases where snow or ice affects road traffic, Traffic may implement measures such as restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles and those without winter tyres, all-weather tyres, or chains. Additionally, the DGT may limit speed, prohibit overtaking, conduct total preventive closures, and enforce mandatory monitoring of alternative routes.
Traffic also has 32 automated and monitored diversions ready for the parking of lorries, to be activated if necessary.
In this situation, the DGT recommends leaving the left lane free to allow the passage of road maintenance and snowplough vehicles, paying attention to the signage on variable message panels and the instructions of the Civil Guard Traffic Group agents, exercising caution when driving through areas and roads affected by this forecast; as well as having the appropriate means and equipment to travel safely, including chains or winter tyres, and understanding the snow colours and their driving conditions.
