Electric cars have gained popularity in recent years, but they have also been the subject of numerous urban legends. Most of these myths relate to range, charging times, or battery degradation.

However, many of these misconceptions are gradually losing ground. Although electric cars still have some areas for improvement compared to combustion vehicles, battery technology has advanced significantly. Modern electric cars offer increasingly greater ranges, with many models exceeding 400 kilometres. Additionally, the public charging network is rapidly expanding, making long-distance travel more feasible.

Technology has advanced by leaps and bounds, and electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly attractive and viable option for many drivers, although not all of their advantages apply to every driver.

Charging time is one of the moments that generates the most questions among users. For instance, as explained by Norauto, it is not true that you have to wait for the battery to completely discharge before charging it. This false idea comes from the batteries that old mobile phones used, where it was indeed advisable to wait for a full discharge. With current batteries, it is counterproductive, as running down the charge level shortens the battery's lifespan. Allowing it to discharge completely risks immobilising the car; it is best to avoid dropping below 20%.

On the other hand, while it may seem that fast chargers are the best option, it is better to use a slow and specific charger for daily use and reserve fast chargers for exceptional situations, as batteries handle this type of slow charging better.

It is also not advisable to leave the car parked without a charge for prolonged periods. This significantly harms the battery. Although the batteries of new vehicles are designed to withstand high and low temperatures, extreme temperatures also affect the batteries of plug-in hybrids and electric cars. Their components degrade, and their range is reduced. Of course, they have protection systems such as liquid cooling systems.

Other urban legends include the belief that the battery should always be charged to full. In fact, it is recommended not to exceed 80% battery charge. One of the most common myths is that electric car batteries easily explode. In reality, this is very rare. However, the few cases that have occurred have received widespread attention. This is due to inefficient temperature control by the battery thermal management system (BTMS).

Regarding price, while the initial purchase price of an electric car may be higher, the long-term operating costs are much lower. The cost of electricity is lower than that of fossil fuels, and electric cars require less maintenance. Additionally, many governments offer financial incentives for purchasing electric vehicles.
