The rector of the University of Alicante (UA), Amparo Navarro, announced on Thursday the institution's intention to cease publishing content on the social network X (formerly Twitter) through its institutional accounts. This decision aligns with the agreement of the Governing Board of the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE).

As Navarro explained, and according to the statement issued by CRUE, the agreement is based on the view that 'X has adopted a behaviour that deviates from democratic values, with little control over the truthfulness and quality of information, in addition to a lack of ethical management.'

'The platform does not reflect the principles and values of the universities it represents, which are committed to education, freedom, respect, and social responsibility.'

CRUE

In this context, 'CRUE considers that the platform does not reflect the principles and values of the universities it represents, which are committed to education, freedom, respect, and social responsibility,' and therefore, 'will cease to publish content and interact in a space that promotes attitudes contrary to these values and will expand its presence in alternative social channels.'

The rector reiterated, paraphrasing the statement from the Conference, of which Navarro is a board member, 'that universities must be leaders in promoting democratic, ethical, and responsible values, and this decision reaffirms the commitment to rights and freedoms, social responsibility, respect, and strengthening constructive dialogue as fundamental tools to advance towards a more just and ethical society.'

New structure of the vice-rectorates

In other matters, the UA's Governing Council unanimously approved the new structure of the vice-rectorates, whose directors will take office in a ceremony this Friday, January 24, at 11 a.m., in the auditorium of Lecture Hall 2. The approved structure does not differ in terms of the number of positions from that of the previous term.

This is the first meeting of the UA's highest governing body since last December when Amparo Navarro, a professor of Tax and Financial Law, was re-elected as rector. She has resumed chairing the Council, which now includes the new vice-rectors who form the UA's executive team.

During her speech, the rector addressed the state of affairs regarding the issue related to the Medicine studies at UA. Navarro explained that a first meeting has already been held with all the parties involved and the EVES, the Valencian School of Health Education of the Generalitat Valenciana, which is responsible for regulating the practices.

In this regard, she positively assessed 'the progress of the negotiations' as well as 'the willingness of the parties to reach an agreement that benefits everyone as soon as possible.' The rector reported that a roadmap has been established, with various meetings planned involving the vice-rectors of Studies and the coordinators of the degree at both universities.
