This Thursday marked the presentation of the team of federated athletes and coaches representing the University of Alicante for the 2024-2025 season. Specifically, around 200 individuals, comprising 182 athletes and 18 coaches, will compete in sports such as climbing, football, orienteering, triathlon, rowing, volleyball, and rugby.
Given that both rowing and rugby have male and female teams, and volleyball, although only female, has senior and junior teams, there are a total of ten teams competing under the UA banner, in addition to the Runners UA amateur running group.
The event was presided over by UA's rector, Amparo Navarro, accompanied by the Vice-Rector for Culture, Sports, and University Extension, Catalina Iliescu, and the Director of the Sports Secretariat, Sergio Sellés. Also in attendance were Pascale Anne Precheur Massieu, a technician from the Physical Activity and Sports Section of the Valencian Government's Department of Education, Universities, and Employment; Ricardo Bernabéu, Sports Councillor of San Vicente del Raspeig; Cristina Picó, Director of Villa Universitaria; and Rafael García, Director of UA's Sports Service, among other personalities.
As is tradition, two athletes participated in the event, representing the rest, and shared a few words about their experience in sports and at the University of Alicante. First, Victoria Cubero Mallavía, a student of Advertising and Public Relations, who competes in the senior volleyball team, spoke. "In sports, I believe the important thing is not just the journey, but who we travel it with. When we win, we grow together, but the team is more important, as they are there to support and push you when you can't go on, when you think of giving up, when we lose," Cubero stated.
On the other hand, Álvaro Ogara García, a student of Physical Activity and Sports Sciences and a member of the rowing team, also spoke. "It's a pride to compete for the name of the house that educates us and allows us to practice the sport we love. We are passionate about competing because losing is learning and winning is another opportunity to keep growing," Ogara expressed.
Finally, the event was concluded by the rector before proceeding to the traditional family photo. Navarro placed special emphasis on thanking the staff of the Sports Service, extending it also to all UA's coaches and athletes.
"You are an example of effort and overcoming challenges, and you will be for those who come in the future, just as illustrious graduates who represented the institution in sports and now lead our society are for you," she indicated, adding that "at UA, we not only offer education but a life experience that includes sports and culture."
