Trump has become the first President of the United States to be confirmed as a criminal this Friday. Judge Merchan has upheld the conviction on 35 counts of falsifying business records, formalizing his status as a convict, which he will carry throughout his term for the first time in US history.
The sentence comes ten days before the magnate is set to assume the presidency. It is not expected that the judge will punish him with imprisonment or a fine, due to his new status as president-elect. In any case, the Republican leader can file an appeal against his conviction. The only thing he cannot do is pardon himself.
Trump appeared via videoconference before the Manhattan court from his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida. His face was stern and frowning. He has tried to halt the process persistently, but his last recourse was exhausted on Thursday when the Supreme Court refused to pardon him through an 'express' route. During Friday's hearing, the magnate stated that it was "a terrible experience. I think it has been a tremendous setback" for New York and its judicial system. "But the fact is that I am totally innocent," he added.
