Friday marked a tragic day on the roads of Alicante. A serious traffic accident involving the overturning of a truck carrying flammable materials inside the AP-7 tunnel, near Pilar de la Horadada and heading towards Cartagena, resulted in a spectacular fire and claimed the life of the driver, according to sources close to the case as confirmed to TodoAlicante.
It appears the accident occurred following a blowout of one of the truck's tyres. The combination of the vehicle's non-hazardous load and the location of the accident, inside the tunnel, intensified the ferocity of the flames.
At the time of the accident, another truck was inside the tunnel but was not affected by the fire, and its driver managed to exit on foot, according to the same sources.
To extinguish the fire, the Consortium dispatched three command units (UMJ), two heavy urban pumps (BUP9), three heavy tanker pumps (BNP), a rescue van (FSV), as well as an officer, two sub-officers, a sergeant, three corporals, and 14 firefighters from the Torrevieja, Almoradí, Orihuela, and Elche stations.
