Tribute to Antoni Biosca at the University of Alicante

Tribute to Professor Antoni Biosca, who passed away last March. The Latin Philology Area of the Faculty of Philosophy and Arts at the University of Alicante has organised a recital of Greco-Latin classical texts in his memory, to be held this Wednesday on campus.

The event will commence at noon in the Agora of Miguel Hernández Square. It is there that teachers, students, and staff will proceed to read these texts, both in their original version and in translations into the various languages represented in the faculty.

This activity aims to pay tribute to the memory and intellectual legacy of Antoni Biosca, highlighting his love for the classics and his commitment to teaching. His research focused on medieval Latin philology, with special dedication to the critical edition of Latin texts from the Crown of Aragon and the analysis of religious controversies between Islam and Christianity in the Middle Ages.

Antoni Biosca i Bas began his academic career after graduating in Classical Philology from the University of Salamanca and obtaining his doctorate in Latin Philology from the University of Alicante, where he spent most of his professional life. In 2002, he joined the UA as a lecturer.

He was appointed Associate Professor of Latin Philology in 2015 and, since 2014, he has coordinated the Latin Philology Area. In this role, he promoted teaching projects, internationalisation initiatives, outreach activities, and meetings around classical studies, always with an open, interdisciplinary, and contemporary perspective.

This Wednesday's tribute is conceived as a space for remembrance, reflection, and celebration of the intellectual heritage that Antoni Biosca left "among those who had the fortune to know him," the institution explains. The university community is invited to participate in this act of recognition of his legacy.
