On Monday, May 12, the trial of music producer Sean 'Diddy' Combs commenced in New York. He is accused of sex trafficking, racketeering, and transportation for prostitution, charges that could lead to a 50-year prison sentence. After a week dedicated to jury selection, which concluded with a panel of eight men and four women aged between 30 and 70, the prosecution, led by Maurene Comey with Emily Johnson as the opening prosecutor, portrayed the accused as the leader of a "criminal enterprise" that, for two decades, used his power to subjugate and sexually exploit women.

The first day focused on the case of Casandra Ventura, known as Cassie, whom Combs met when she was 19 and he was 36. She described episodes of extreme violence and blackmail by the accused, who allegedly subjected her to physical, emotional, and financial control while promising her a music career. Alongside her testimony, two other victims, under pseudonyms Jane and Mia, recounted similar abuses, threats, and forced drug use.

The first witness, a former security guard at the hotel where 'Diddy' Combs assaulted Cassie in 2016, revealed how the music producer attempted to buy his silence. This was followed by a second testimony from a man who claimed to have been hired as a prostitute and spoke of encounters with Cassie arranged by Combs, complete with specific instructions and recordings.

The rapper has had the support of his mother, Janice Combs, and his three daughters, Chace, D'Lila, and Jessie Combs, in the courtroom. However, the young women have had to leave the court on several occasions due to the harsh and explicit nature of the testimonies regarding the sexual assaults.

The defence, on the other hand, has flatly rejected the accusations. "This is not about whether he is a good or bad boyfriend," stated attorney Teny Geargos, who has shielded herself with the reality of toxic relationships. However, the existence of a recording showing the rapper's brutal assault on Cassie has left her with no choice but to admit to episodes of domestic violence. In any case, she argued that "this case is about Sean Combs' private and personal sexual life, which has nothing to do with his legal businesses." "One might think of him as a jerk, as bad. But his accusations are not for being a jerk or evil. He is accused of organised crime," she pointed out, accusing the complainants of being motivated by money.
