It is logical to think of summer as the ideal season for camper travel, but the off-season holds the greatest advantages. While the summer months mean sharing holidays with thousands of other tourists, the early months of the year offer a different Spain, calmer, more relaxed, and economical in every sense.
Escaping in winter presents certain challenges, that's clear. The low temperatures, adverse weather conditions, and a more hostile environment on the roads pose obstacles that, for many, have little to do with enjoyment. However, they are easily overcome thanks to the quality and equipment of the campers available in a modern fleet like roadsurfer's.
Today's campers are built on cutting-edge commercial vehicles, equipped with the latest in driving assistance and safety systems from brands like Citroën, Fiat, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, or Volkswagen, among others. These ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) not only make handling easier but also provide a shield of protection against any incident.
These are the mandatory systems, present in the roadsurfer fleet registered from July 2024: Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping System, Reverse Detection, Intelligent Speed Assistant, Fatigue and Attention Detection System, Rear Seat Belt Reminder, Traffic Sign Detection System, Adaptive Cruise Control, Black Box, and the pre-installation of the Alcolock.
Additionally, the models are always fitted with "all season" or 4-season tyres. These tyres, which are not mandatory in Spain, offer superior grip in adverse conditions such as cold asphalt or rain and can even be driven on snow. It has never been easier to reach ski resorts and camp, so let's see how they perform in low temperatures.
The bravest can opt to rent a conventional camper like the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo (Travel Home), the Ford Nugget Plus (Camper Cabin Deluxe), or the Volkswagen California (Surfer Suite), all of which have independent heating for the cabin, so the cold has no place inside.
However, this type of model relies on public bathrooms or a campsite. Facilities that, by the way, are usually of very high quality in Spain, especially if we are near ski resorts. If you prefer your own bathroom, you should choose between large volume campers like the Fiat Ducato (Couple Cottage) or the MAN TGE (Family Finca).
In these cases, the installation of clean and grey water tanks is thermally insulated to prevent freezing at very low temperatures. Moreover, propane gas is more effective in these situations, and its larger cargo space will allow you to transport all the bulky winter luggage.
Travelling in a camper brings you uniquely close to nature, both in summer and in the colder months of the year. Destinations like the Vall d'Aran (Catalonia), Pas de la Casa (Andorra), or Sierra Nevada (Andalusia) are the most common, also because they are among the best adapted to the rising trend of campers and motorhomes.
In these ski resorts, you will find specific parking or motorhome areas for leisure vehicles, well-located, with services and flat surfaces. Sleeping just a few meters from the first ski slope is a dream for many, but not everyone has the same tastes.
If you prefer safer activities, snowshoeing is a good option, or if, on the contrary, you want adrenaline and fun, do not hesitate to try snowmobiles or mushing (dog sledding). For the more relaxed, these resorts have restaurants of very good gastronomic quality or the typical bar at the foot of the slope, but also a very interesting nightlife.
