Holy Week is fast approaching in Alicante. This Sunday, 13th April, locals will take their white palms to accompany 'La Burrita' in the first procession of the week, which will adorn the city's streets. This celebration, with over 400 years of history, will feature 27 processional parades in 2025.
It combines Castilian-style processions with Andalusian influences and unique nods to Alicante's identity, such as Santa Mujer Verónica, Cristo del Mar, or the Procession of Silence. Saetas are also a staple, especially on Holy Wednesday, as the Virgin of Solitude 'La Marinera' passes through the Plaza de la Santísima Faz.
To keep this tradition alive, traffic disruptions will affect nearly all neighbourhoods in the city centre. The official route passes through the Rambla, leading to significant changes in bus routes during procession hours.
Urban bus lines 2, 5, 8, 10, 12, 13, 21, and 22 will alter their routes and stops due to the Rambla closure during Holy Week from 8th to 18th April.
During the processions, there will also be diversions and stop modifications on lines 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, C6, 12, 13, 21, 22, and 23 from 13th to 18th April. All changes can be checked on the alert page of the concessionaire company Vectalia.
Regarding traffic closures, the Rambla de Méndez Núñez will remain closed to traffic until 20th April, as it hosts the official procession route for Holy Week.
The special cleaning operation will be active throughout the week. Clean-ups will occur before and after each procession, with pressure washers cleaning the streets to remove wax residues.
In the afternoon, municipal teams will handle general maintenance. Additionally, beach cleaning has intensified since last weekend to ensure their daily good condition.
During Holy Week 2024, over 4,000 tonnes of waste were collected. The concessionaire Netial urges citizens to collaborate in maintaining cleanliness.
The Local Police will deploy a large security operation, with officers on duty in morning, afternoon, and night shifts. Holy Thursday will see the highest concentration of personnel, coinciding with up to five simultaneous processions. Over 400 officers are expected to participate, supported by 82 Civil Protection volunteers.
