During the second phase of the 2024 Christmas holiday departures, which will last until 11:59 PM on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, it is expected that 6.42 million long-distance road trips will be made. These movements will add to those already made at the start of the holiday season, with main destinations being second homes, mountain areas for winter sports, and tourist attractions for winter and Christmas holidays, as well as commercial areas.

The most unfavorable travel times are between 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM. To ensure these trips are as orderly, smooth, and safe as possible, Traffic has planned several measures, including reversible and additional lanes with cones and signage during peak traffic hours, and the establishment of alternative routes.

Additionally, roadworks will be halted, sports events and other activities that occupy the road will be limited, and restrictions will be placed on trucks in general and those carrying certain goods on specific road sections, dates, and times.

To implement all these measures, the DGT has officials, specialized technical staff managing Traffic Control Centers, agents from the Civil Guard Traffic Group, and employees from maintenance companies, concession roads under the Ministry of Transport, and other road authorities, as well as emergency services personnel, including medical and fire services.

Furthermore, as always, Traffic appeals to citizens' responsibility to avoid actions that could lead to accidents with fatal consequences. The slogan for this year's Christmas campaign is "Drive as if you were carrying the main course of the Christmas dinner."

Since the holiday period began on December 20, 28 people have died in traffic accidents. To prevent further tragedy, and despite these being well-known messages to drivers, it is necessary to reiterate some basic recommendations:

- Do not drive if you have consumed alcohol during celebrations, and certainly do not allow anyone who has to drive.

- Exercise maximum caution on short and night journeys, even if they are familiar.

- Pay attention to winter driving conditions, check the weather forecast, and carry essential items for adverse conditions.

- Plan your trip in advance and stay informed about any road incidents through traffic bulletins on various radio and TV stations, the website, Twitter @DGTes and @InformacionDGT, and by calling 011.
