Shareholders of Toyota Motor, the global automotive leader in sales, have endorsed Akio Toyoda's continuation as chairman this Thursday. Although the official vote count has not yet been released by the company, initial estimates suggest support exceeding the 72% obtained last year, which marked the lowest level for a Toyota director in its history.

This re-election comes at a strategic time for the Japanese company, which is engaged in an ambitious plan to privatise Toyota Industries Corporation (TICO), its machinery manufacturer.

The operation would be carried out through a Public Acquisition Offer (PAO) led by Akio Toyoda himself, adding a new and significant challenge to his tenure.

The PAO, whose official announcement is expected between May and June, amounts to $41.4 billion (€36.722 billion). This funding would come from a special purpose vehicle backed by Japan's major banks, highlighting the magnitude and financial backing of the operation.

The parties involved have already appointed their financial advisors, confirming that the acquisition process of Toyota Industries Corporation is progressing as planned. This large-scale transaction would involve a personal investment from Toyoda along with loans from key financial entities such as Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and other Japanese megabanks.

The initiative to privatise TICO is part of a broader effort by Toyota Motor to unravel its complex web of cross-shareholdings. This strategy responds to a push from the Japanese government to promote fair competition and improve corporate governance among the country's large business conglomerates.

The continuity of Akio Toyoda as chairman, backed by his shareholders, suggests strong confidence in his leadership to navigate both the challenges of corporate governance and the ambitious restructuring and privatisation plans the company faces, consolidating its position in the global automotive landscape.
