El presidente de la Diputación de Alicante, Toni Pérez, lamented on Thursday the Supreme Court ruling that mandates the immediate implementation of the ecological flows of the Tagus River, rather than a gradual approach until 2027. He expressed concern over the "irreparable economic, social, and environmental damages" this measure will have on the province of Alicante, stating that this judicial decision is a "direct consequence of the disastrous, arbitrary, and partisan water policy of the central Government."
"This decision, coupled with the announcement of new rules for the Tajo-Segura transfer, is another blow to this infrastructure and seriously jeopardizes its viability," the Alicante leader pointed out. He accused the Spanish Government of promoting a water policy "far removed from the general interest and the principle of solidarity, lacking the scientific and technical rigor required for such decisions, which should also be the result of consensus."
In this regard, he warned of the consequences that the increase in ecological flow will have on the Spanish Levante, "causing millions in economic losses and the destruction of thousands of jobs across all sectors, in addition to contributing to soil destruction and the advance of desertification."
"It is inconceivable that the Government, which should defend the interests of all Spaniards, is condemning a part of Spain to ruin without objective and technical criteria," insisted Toni Pérez. From the Alicante Provincial Council, its president highlighted, "we will study the most appropriate mechanisms to counter this policy, because water is a right for everyone."
In this sense, the provincial president lamented "that the PSOE in the province of Alicante does not raise its voice against this injustice" and once again called for "unity." "Beyond interests and political colors, it is time to work together to defend the interests of this land," concluded Toni Pérez.
