In 2025, Spain has experienced significant drops in temperature, causing many vehicles parked outdoors to be covered in ice in the mornings.
Although it may seem obvious, it is always necessary to remove ice from the windshield before setting off. The cold winter temperatures can affect cars in various ways, potentially causing failures that reduce safety while driving. An icy windshield impairs visibility, increasing the likelihood of an accident.
This occurs because some drivers start their cars, waiting for the heating and wipers to take effect, while driving many meters with limited visibility, creating a dangerous situation.
Additionally, a study by the American Automobile Association (AAA) has shown that the operation of ADAS systems is negatively affected by rain, snow, and, to a lesser extent, dirt on the windshield. This organization advises drivers to consider that lane-keeping and automatic emergency braking assistance systems may underperform in adverse weather conditions. It also recommends keeping areas around cameras and radar sensors clean.
When it comes to removing ice, a scraper is one of the most commonly used methods. However, caution is advised as it can sometimes damage the windshield.
Carglass recommends removing ice using a plastic scraper, which does not damage the glass surface. Another method is to spray the glass with alcohol, which quickly melts the ice. It is also advisable to apply a specific liquid and insect repellent treatment to the windshield, which not only improves visibility during day and night in the rain but also makes the glass less prone to freezing and easier to clear of ice.
The DGT recommends starting the engine, turning on the heater with the fan at maximum, and directing the airflow towards the windshield. Never wait for the engine to warm up before turning on the heater, as a sudden temperature change can crack the glass. They also remind us not to forget to remove ice from the headlights: In cars with halogen headlights, simply turning on the lights for a while should suffice. However, modern lighting technologies or halogens with a design that significantly separates the parabola from the protective glass require manual ice removal.
Conversely, there are a series of myths or recommendations that, far from solving the ice problem, can cause additional issues. For instance, although it may be tempting, pouring hot water on the windshield can cause a thermal shock that damages the glass. The sudden temperature change can weaken the glass and cause cracks.
Salt can scratch the glass and is not effective for quickly removing ice, so it is not a valid recommendation. Using direct heat sources, such as blowtorches or heaters, is not only drastic but can also deform the glass or even cause a fire.
To prevent ice on the windshield, you can cover it with a protective cover overnight.
