Spain is currently experiencing a severe winter storm that has blanketed large areas of the country with snow, affecting numerous autonomous communities. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued yellow alerts for snowfalls in regions such as Castilla y León, Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, the Community of Madrid, La Rioja, and the Valencian Community, with significant accumulations expected in various parts of the peninsula. In response to this situation, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has issued essential recommendations to ensure the safety of drivers who must travel on snow-affected roads.
📢❄️In total, 20 roads affected.

On its website, the DGT emphasises the importance of proper planning before embarking on any journey in adverse winter conditions. It is crucial to check weather forecasts and road conditions through official sources, such as the DGT or AEMET. Additionally, it is advised to avoid travelling at night, as visibility is reduced and temperatures are typically lower, increasing the risk of ice formation on the road.
Properly equipping the vehicle is another crucial aspect of safe driving on snow-affected roads. According to the DGT, it is mandatory to carry chains or have winter tyres, especially if travelling in areas where snow is expected. It is also advisable to carry a torch, warm clothing, water, and non-perishable food in case of being stranded by snow. Keeping the fuel tank full and ensuring the proper functioning of brakes, lights, and windscreen wipers are additional preventive measures that should not be overlooked.
While driving on snowy roads, the DGT recommends exercising extreme caution and adjusting speed to the road conditions. It is essential to increase the safety distance with the vehicle ahead, as snow and ice reduce grip and increase braking distances. Driving smoothly, avoiding sudden manoeuvres that could lead to loss of vehicle control, and keeping the left lane clear to allow emergency vehicles and snowploughs to pass are also advised. Additionally, on slopes, it is advisable to use high gears to prevent wheel slippage.
Moreover, if during the journey you encounter heavy snowfall that hampers visibility and circulation, the prudent action is to find a safe place to stop and wait for conditions to improve. Never stop the vehicle on the hard shoulder, as it could be hit by other drivers who do not see it in time. Furthermore, if immobilised by snow, it is important to remain calm and stay inside the vehicle, ensuring that the exhaust pipe is not blocked to prevent gas accumulation inside.
Finally, the DGT informs that in cases of heavy snowfall, traffic restrictions may be implemented to ensure road safety and facilitate the work of maintenance teams. These measures may include prohibiting the circulation of heavy vehicles, mandating the use of chains or winter tyres, and limiting speed on affected sections.
