Doctors have revealed the most common consultations they attend to during the early days of July. One of them is the sting of the weever fish, which has been spotted on the Alicante beaches.

From the Alicante Health Department, through the newly activated Urbanova clinic, they have detailed the main consultations attended to for residents in the area.

Among them are the stings of the weever fish, as confirmed alongside others like otitis, conjunctivitis, or respiratory infections.

In the case of the weever fish on the Alicante beaches, this animal hides under the sea sand and its sting causes unbearable pain.

In some cases, many swimmers 'attacked' by the weever fish believe it to be a jellyfish sting due to a symptom similar to a sting that spreads from the foot to the rest of the body.

Thus, swimmers who go to the beach for a good summer day can be affected by the sting of the weever fish, as its physique allows it to blend in with the tone of the sand under the sea, where it hides.

From the Department of Health, they explain that the stings of the weever fish "can be equally painful" as those of a jellyfish. However, they stress that "this marine fish, which inhabits our coasts, is especially dangerous due to its venomous spines."

In the case of noticing the sting of the weever fish, Health authorities indicate that it is necessary to identify the species to facilitate medical diagnosis. They also recommend applying heat to the affected area.

For this step, the Department of Health details that the sting should be submerged in hot water at about 45 or 50 degrees for an hour or 90 minutes, as "heat inactivates the toxins."

Similarly, they emphasize the importance of seeking immediate medical attention, especially if symptoms are severe or persist.

In the case of Alicante, the Urbanova clinic has frequently attended to cases of weever fish stings. However, Health authorities point out that those affected should go to the emergency room if they experience severe symptoms.

Among them, they list vomiting, fever, difficulty breathing, or convulsions. "Medical intervention is crucial in cases of severe reactions, such as anaphylactic shock."

Additionally, to avoid the sting of the weever fish, it is recommended to wear protective footwear on sandy floors and pay attention when handling fish on the beach.
