A new device capable of fining speed violations is now operational on Spanish roads. It is undetectable by anti-radar systems and more effective than any used by the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) to date.
The Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT), the traffic authority of Catalonia, has introduced a radar housed in a helicopter, "the only airborne speed camera that does not emit any type of wave, Doppler effect, or laser beam," making it undetectable by jammers.
Catalonia is at the forefront of speed control systems, having recently introduced autonomous radars capable of changing their position to avoid being marked through mobile applications, which the DGT has admitted is a problem.
In fact, the Traffic authorities are considering banning applications like Waze, which alert users to fixed and mobile radars and police operations. According to the organization, "they can encourage reckless behavior." To achieve this, they would need to amend the Traffic and Road Safety Law, whose latest version came into effect in 2023.
The director of the SCT, Ramón Lamiel, stated that the new system, called Falcon, "has passed all validations and has started issuing fines." According to Lamiel, this system can issue up to 12 fines in 90 minutes of operation.
All radar presence must be alerted to drivers, even if it is a mobile speed camera like the Falcon. When it is operational, it will be announced through informational panels indicating that the helicopter is equipped with a mobile speed radar.
The Falcon presents an advantage over the DGT's Pegasus system as it has an error margin of less than 2%. Comparatively, Pegasus has a 5% error margin, and its laser system requires regular maintenance after a certain number of operations, which Falcon does not.
The DGT helicopters can detect speed violations up to 360 kilometers per hour and calculate measurements every 3, 6, and 9 seconds to determine the average speed and directly issue fines.
