The city of Alicante is gearing up to celebrate one of its most entertaining and popular festivals, the Carnival, which will take place from February 27 to March 5 in the city centre and old town, filling the streets with music and costumes over the weekend.
The Alicante City Council has approved the official programme of events for the carnival, organised by the association La Meka. These will kick off on February 27 with the decoration of the streets and the Plaza del Carmen.
The streets of the old town of the city of Alicante will be adorned from midday, ready for the evening when the traditional correfocs of the carnival starts at Plaza del 25 de Mayo - behind the Central Market - concluding in the old town, where a sausage feast and the first concert will be held.
With this parade full of gunpowder and fun, the city of Alicante will celebrate one of the world's oldest festivals, which commemorates the arrival of spring. The origin of the carnival is rooted in multiple societies, such as Roman, Greek, and Egyptian, although the great expansion of this festival - according to archives - occurred during the Middle Ages.
The popularity of the carnival rose during Christianity. Its celebration marks the beginning of Lent, hence the name Carnival, which comes from 'carnem levare' ('to remove meat'). This curiosity is due to its commemoration days before Ash Wednesday, marking the start of the liturgical period of preparation for Easter, a time of abstinence and fasting.
After the traditional correfoc on February 27 at 9:30 p.m., along with the sausage feast and concerts at Plaza del Carmen in Alicante from 11:30 p.m., the city will open the calendar and programme of carnival events.
On February 28, the proclamation will officially inaugurate the activities. This event will be at 10:30 p.m. at Plaza del Carmen in Alicante, followed by a concert. Additionally, the day will be a holiday in the city's schools, with a day off for children.
February 27: Correfocs, sausage feast, and concert
February 28: Proclamation and concert
March 1: Children's carnival, batucada, concerts, and Ramblero Saturday
March 5: Parade, wake and burial of the sardine, and concert
March 9: Children's carnival day
Saturday, March 1, is planned as the big day of the carnival in Alicante. The events organised by La Meka are joined by the Ramblero Saturday organised by the Alicante City Council on the Rambla de Méndez Núñez.
Thus, the day will start with the children's carnival at 6 p.m. on March 1, along with a batucada at 7 p.m. The events will continue at 10:30 p.m. with concerts at Plaza del Carmen, which will combine with the party on the Rambla de Méndez Núñez.
Another eagerly awaited event in the programme of the Alicante carnival is the sardine. It will parade through the streets of the old town on March 5 from 8:30 p.m. during its wake, before burning - around 11:30 p.m. - at Plaza del Carmen to symbolise the burial of the sardine. The flames will give way to a concert.
The city's youngest will enjoy another day of carnival in Alicante on Sunday, March 9, with recreational activities and costumes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
