The Patronato del Misteri d'Elx has unveiled the promotional poster for this year's La Festa performances. The artist from Elche, Pepa Ferrández Bañón, was tasked with creating the artwork and expressed that painting the poster representing the Misteri this year "is a true honour as an artist."
The artwork features a close-up of the hands of the stagehands who place the blue fabric of the maroma, paying homage to the silent and essential work done from 'the sky'. Pepa aimed to highlight the efforts of those who make the aerial magic of the Misteri possible, from the descent of the magrana to the appearance of the araceli and the final coronation.
The Casa de la Festa once again hosted this event, attended by the Councillor for Culture, Irene Ruiz; the President of the Patronato del Misteri d'Elx, Francisco Borja; and María Dolores Mulá, the presenter of the artist who could not attend the presentation as she currently resides in Canada.
Artist's Biography
The artist Pepa Ferrández Bañón is a painter born in Elche on November 15, 1960. Daughter of the former mayor of the city José Ferrández Cruz and Mª Teresa Bañón Cunnington, Pepa studied with the Jesuitinas until she was 16, a period she recalls "with respect, but also with apathy," where drawing was her refuge. At the La Asunción Institute, she began to express her creativity, during which she created a satirical mural about Holy Week. At 18, she moved to Valencia to study Fine Arts, where she met D. Víctor, a professor who recognized her artistic talent. After obtaining her degree, she returned to Elche, where she continued working and teaching at the Hort del Xocolater painting school.
Irene Ruiz, in turn, expressed her gratitude to Pepa Bañón for her work, stating that "for me, today is a beautiful day as I had the fortune of growing up with these characteristic drawings of Pepa throughout my childhood, which are now part of the history of Elche and our Festa." Ruiz also added that "she is an exponential artist who today enriches the collection of Misteri d'Elx posters that surpasses itself each year."
The President of the Patronato del Misteri d'Elx, Francisco Borja, remarked that "this poster is not just an image: it is a way to announce, to invite, and to remind that the Misteri is part of who we are, and also how we present ourselves to the world, as guardians of a UNESCO-recognized heritage."
