In Spain, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) operates nearly 3,000 speed cameras to monitor the roads, a number that has been increasing in recent years. Among the fixed, section, traffic light, or speed cameras, many have recently heard about the 'ninja' cameras. These sophisticated devices, unlike the aforementioned ones that measure speed, detect other common violations.

For instance, the 'Ninja', as they are popularly known, ensure that drivers come to a complete stop at a STOP sign and do not treat it as a Yield sign. The name derives from their ability to blend into urban or rural environments and operate stealthily, often unnoticed by most drivers.

If the camera detects that a vehicle fails to properly stop, the driver will be fined up to 200 euros and lose four points from their license.

The technology is more advanced than regular speed cameras, as these devices are equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced software that analyses vehicle behaviour at intersections. "The system records the car's movement and calculates whether it has come to a complete stop or made an insufficient stop," explains the Traffic Authority.

Where are the 'ninja' cameras located?

The DGT has two devices. One is located on the CM-220 road, at kilometre 68.88, near the town of Motilla del Palancar in the province of Cuenca. This location has been chosen due to significant road safety issues caused by non-compliance with the STOP sign.

The other is located in the Community of Madrid, at kilometre 13.95 on the M-222 road, which connects the towns of Estremera and Valdaracete. Like the previous case, it is a location with a significant history of violations and a potential risk of accidents.
