BYD, the Chinese giant, has achieved a milestone in the European electric vehicle (EV) market by surpassing Tesla in registrations last April, although the latest registration figures in Europe have crowned Volkswagen as the winner.
According to Jato Dynamics, BYD registered 7,231 EVs in Europe, marking a 169% increase compared to the same month last year, positioning it in the tenth spot in the rankings.
This figure places BYD ahead of its main rival, Tesla, for the first time, whose registrations fell by 49% year-on-year in April, recording 7,165 units, just 66 fewer than the Chinese brand.
Globally, BYD consolidates its position as the leading manufacturer in new energy vehicle (NEV) sales, including plug-in hybrids and pure electrics, with 920,000 global deliveries in the first quarter of 2025, holding a 21% market share in its segment. Since entering the European market in 2023, the brand has sold over 11 million electrified units.
In Spain, BYD's growth is even more remarkable, having already matched the total sales of 2024 by April, with 5,355 units and an impressive 646% growth so far this year. Its share in the plug-in vehicle market (electric + hybrid) has reached 9.6%. The BYD Seal U DM-i stands out as the best-selling plug-in hybrid in the national market to date.
Volkswagen leads the global electric market in Europe
BYD's expansion strategy in Europe is ambitious: the brand currently operates in 29 countries across the continent and plans to expand into 12 new markets throughout 2025. Its goal is to reach 1,000 sales points in Europe by the end of this year, with 100 of them in Spain.

Beyond this rivalry between the Chinese and American brands, the European market has once again been led by German brands, with a clear victory for Volkswagen (which reached 23,514 registrations).
BMW follows with 14,867 units registered, representing a 5% increase compared to the same month last year, and Skoda, reaching 13,598 registrations.
Meanwhile, the best-selling electric model has been the Skoda Elroq, which achieved 7,998 registrations. It is followed by Volkswagen's ID.3, ID.7, and ID.4 models, each surpassing 6,000 registered units.
