The likelihood of experiencing a fatal car accident in the United States, based on segment breakdowns, indicates that small cars are among the most unsafe vehicles. In terms of size, weight, and passive safety, they are at a disadvantage compared to larger vehicles.
By brand, for every 178 million kilometres driven by a Tesla car, one person suffers a fatal accident.
Similarly, the number of accidents recorded by Tesla vehicles was higher than those of other manufacturers such as Kia or Hyundai, according to a report by the American research firm iSeeCars, which examined accidents recorded in the United States between 2017 and 2022.
Tesla recorded the highest fatal accident rate among all vehicle brands during the period, with a rate of 5.6. This means that for every 178 million kilometres driven by an electric car from Elon Musk's brand, one person suffers a fatal accident.
However, the report warns that these numbers do not determine how safe a car is in itself, but rather how it is driven by users.
"Most of these vehicles receive excellent safety ratings, so it is not a matter of vehicle design," warns iSeeCars senior analyst Karl Brauer, adding that, in any case, the reality is that the grip system of the door handles may have been responsible for some of the accidents due to the inability of some occupants to exit the car in time due to the locking mechanisms.
By model, the Tesla Model Y recorded a fatal accident rate of 10.6, which is nearly five times the average of other analysed SUV models. Only the Hyundai Venue, Chevy Corvette, Mitsubishi Mirage, Porsche 911, and Honda CR-V Hybrid had a higher score. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model S achieved a fatal accident rate of 5.8, which is double the average.
