There is one model that reigns supreme in sales in Spain: the Dacia Sandero. So far this year, the Renault Group brand has managed to register 21,377 units, a 16.9% increase compared to last year. It frequently leads the monthly sales podium, often competing with the market's most popular SUV, the Hyundai Tucson.
In August, 2,344 Sanderos were sold, a 30.1% increase from last year. The Korean SUV took second place with 1,385 sales (+39.1%), followed by the Toyota Yaris Cross in third place with 1,351 sales (+47.7%).
In terms of annual aggregate sales, Toyota also secured second place with its Corolla sedan, which sold 15,690 units (+22.7%). Closing the podium was the Seat Ibiza with 14,450 units, a 29.6% increase.
Toyota remains the best-selling brand in our country –having already closed 2023 in this position– due to strong public acceptance of its hybrid engines.
In fact, so far this year, conventional hybrids account for a 30.1% market share, and a considerable portion of those 248,853 sales are from the Japanese brand, which has sold 62.716 units up to August.
Following Toyota are Seat with 44,097 sales; Volkswagen with 43,803; Hyundai with 42,886; and Kia with 40,039. Although it seems likely that Toyota will maintain its position as market leader in Spain in 2024, the second position is still up for grabs.
In the electric car market, which fell by 25.6% in August to reach 3,064 units sold, the leading model was the Tesla Model 3 with 186 sales, representing a decline of 75.4% compared to August 2023.
So far this year, the zero-emission sedan has nearly reached 5,000 units –falling short by just 34 units– and surpasses its SUV sibling, the Model Y, which has achieved 3,284 sales up to August.
According to Aedive (the business association promoting electric vehicles), it is important to note the entry of Chinese brands into this sector. Among them are the MG 4 with 1,894 sales and the BYD Atto 3 –an electric SUV priced at €25,000– which has registered over 600 units cumulatively.
The Dacia Sandero continues to play its main card: a very affordable price combined with low consumption that allows easy access to the DGT's Eco label. Prices for the 90-horsepower engine start at €13,200.
