Encountering a Civil Guard or National Police checkpoint can be a source of anxiety for many, even if they are not committing any infractions or have nothing to worry about.

The Civil Guard usually conducts these checks daily on various Spanish roads to prevent crimes as much as possible and apprehend criminals, making citizen cooperation crucial.

Ideally, if any member of the State Security Forces orders you to stop, you should comply. The officers will inform you of the reason and check that everything is in order; if so, the driver can continue on their way.

Vehicles Exempt from Searches at Traffic Controls

During a checkpoint and according to Organic Law 4/2015, of March 30, authorities may "conduct checks on persons, goods, and vehicles necessary to prevent illegal carrying or use of weapons, explosives, dangerous substances, or other objects, instruments or means that pose a potentially serious risk to people" in public roads, places, and establishments.

Therefore, in these cases, the law emphasizes that citizens must cooperate and avoid obstructing officials' duties. However, there are exceptions for some vehicles.

These are those that function as a dwelling, such as motorhomes, campers, and caravans, which cannot be accessed without the owner's authorization or a judicial order.

The only way officers could enter such a vehicle is if they believe a crime is being committed inside it; in that case, they could access it and detain its occupants.
