The Department of Health has issued a red alert for extreme heat on Saturday, June 28, in eight municipalities of the Marina Alta region due to the heatwave that has hit Spain. The affected localities in the province of Alicante are Tormos, Sagra, El Verger, Benidoleig, Sanet i Negrals, Ondara, Els Poblets, and Beniarbeig, according to the Generalitat.
High temperatures exceeding 40 degrees are expected in some northern parts of the province, especially in the pre-coastal areas, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which warns that minimum temperatures will also be significantly high. In the southern region, temperatures above 36 degrees are anticipated.
In addition to the municipalities under red alert, other areas of Marina Alta are on orange alert for extreme temperatures, according to the latest warnings from Aemet. This includes Dénia, Pedreguer, Murla, El Ràfol d'Almúnia, Benimeli, Pego, and L'Atzúbia, where slightly lower but still dangerous temperatures for health are expected, especially during the central hours of the day.
Therefore, authorities remind that the orange level also poses a significant risk, making it essential to follow prevention and care recommendations against the heat.
The state agency warns that the most intense days of this heatwave will be Sunday and Monday. They explain that from Monday, June 30, the thermal evolution becomes more uncertain due to the possible arrival of an upper-level disturbance, which could increase cloudiness and cause isolated storms in the central and eastern peninsular. These precipitations would be light, although they could be accompanied by very strong wind gusts.
It is expected that from Tuesday, July 1, a cooler and more humid Atlantic air mass will begin to enter the peninsula, leading to a general drop in temperatures that will continue in the following days.
Advice for extreme heat
Health authorities emphasize the importance of taking precautions during this heat episode, especially between 12 and 5 PM. It is recommended to avoid direct sun exposure, stay well hydrated even without feeling thirsty, avoid alcoholic or sugary drinks, and consume light foods such as fruits and vegetables. Special attention should also be paid to the most vulnerable groups: the elderly, children under four years old, and people with chronic illnesses.
Additionally, it is advised to avoid intense physical activity during the hottest hours, seek cool and ventilated spaces, and use appropriate sunscreen. Health authorities also warn of the danger of leaving people or animals inside parked vehicles, even for a short time. The alert will remain active as long as the extreme temperatures persist, particularly affecting the interior and northern coast of the province of Alicante.
