Elche City Council has banned the access of vans and caravans to two beaches in the municipality. Local Police officers will inform and warn from this Tuesday about the restrictions on vehicles wider than 2.2 meters.
Signs are being placed in the vicinity of these beaches in the province of Alicante: on the Camino del Carabassí, next to the hermitage, at the boundary of the Santa Pola municipal area; and also in La Marina, on the access road to the beach.
Thus, the prohibition of these vehicles aims to "protect and defend our coastline," explained Elche's Tourism Councillor, Irene Ruiz. This is a coordinated action with Santa Pola, which has implemented the same boundary throughout the Cabo area.
The measure aims to protect this protected natural environment, prevent illegal camping in areas where overnight stays are not allowed, and curb the discharge of vehicle wastewater into the sea, a frequent practice that endangers swimmers, especially in the summer months.
During this week, the Elche Local Police are placing provisional deterrent signs in these areas - the "most problematic" beach areas - and it is expected that the permanent signs will be available from Easter onwards.
