Teulada Moraira Unveils the Spectacular Geology of Its Coastal Strip

Dunes dating back 100,000 years, bearing traces of vegetation and animal footprints, or reefs of algae and molluscs thriving in its crystal-clear waters. These are some of the natural attractions found along the coast of Teulada Moraira.

The University of Alicante (UA) hosted a new edition of Geolodía Alicante last Saturday, under the theme "The Geological Secrets of Moraira". Over 1,000 participants enjoyed a 7-kilometre round trip along the stunning coastline of Teulada Moraira, from Les Platgetes to the Torre del Cap d'Or. Approximately 60 guides were stationed along the route, providing brief explanations about the area's geological heritage.

Attendees also learned about the origin of the water surfacing in the wetland area of the Senillar marsh and its "riuet", and observed sediments from an ancient Miocene sea, where submarine canyons from 15 million years ago are carved.

Moreover, they discovered how faults have shaped the imposing cliffs of this spectacular coast, or how folds have formed the surrounding mountains and the valley of Teulada Moraira. Additionally, they gained insights into various aspects of the professional world of Geology, such as the construction of breakwaters, beach regeneration, geotechnical studies, and the operation of the Seismic Network of the Valencian Community.

Geolodía is a series of free excursions coordinated by the Geological Society of Spain, guided by geologists and open to the public. The main aim of this event, held nationwide on the same weekend, is to demonstrate that Geology is an engaging and valuable science for our society.
