The Indian summer comes to an abrupt end. The province is experiencing very high temperatures these days, even exceeding 32 degrees in inland areas. This situation will abruptly end with the arrival of the weekend.

It is expected that in just two days, the maximum temperatures could drop by as much as ten degrees, passing from the 35 degrees recorded in the inland areas and the towns of Vega Baja, to the 26 and 25 degrees expected for Saturday and Sunday.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the westerly wind has brought very high temperatures at noon, such as the 32.5 degrees reached in the city of Alicante. However, the agency warns that from this Friday, the westerly wind will start to subside, although thermometers will still mark 30 degrees on the Alicante coast.

Saturday will be when the temperature drop arrives with a «significant decrease.» According to Aemet's forecast, «many places where temperatures exceed 30 degrees today will not reach 25 degrees this weekend.»

For example, Novelda will go from maximum temperatures of 35 degrees and minimums of 20 degrees to 25 and 15 degrees respectively over the weekend. In coastal areas, the maximum figures will drop to 24 degrees with minimums below twenty, while in the mountains of Alicante, minimums could even reach 10 degrees and maximums no more than 22 degrees.

A Cool September

Despite these episodes of heat, Aemet explains that outside the summer quarter, September is having a «slightly cool» character and has become the first month since February 2023 to record an average temperature below normal in a year and a half.

In fact, during the second week of September, average temperatures of 18 degrees were recorded, almost three degrees below what is normal in recent decades, and since then until these last days, averages have not been exceeded.

Aemet insists, however, that although September has cooled down and will have an average temperature below normal, the first nine months of 2024 remain the warmest since 1950, surpassing 2023 and 2022, the second and third warmest years, by three-tenths.
