Illegal tourist apartments are on borrowed time. The Department of Innovation, Industry, Commerce, and Tourism is finalizing a technological update to the Community's Tourist Housing Register, which will put an end to illicit properties.

The Directorate General of Tourism plans to complete this new system by the end of January, to 'continue advancing in the purification' of the current Tourist Housing Register, which reached 'up to 101,205' apartments by the end of last year, according to Councillor Marián Cano.

This new update will allow the deregistration of more than 34,000 tourist-use homes from the regional register, due to the lack of essential data and required documentation according to regulatory standards.

Thus, in the coming weeks, the Generalitat will have a 'purified, reliable register with which we can work, knowing precisely which real tourist housing stock is active,' detailed Cano.

It should be noted that the city of Alicante has a total of 3,292 unregistered homes, identified in the report on tourist-use apartments commissioned by the City Council. These are not registered with the Department of Tourism and the Department of Urban Planning, requirements for the regularization of this type of business. At the same time, there are others with regional authorization but without municipal processing.

Thus, the new update of the Register will allow the management procedures to be processed 'much more agilely, efficiently, and securely,' as will be the case with actions in terms of 'inspection, complaints, and sanctions,' noted the Tourism Councillor.

Presentation to the sector

The Generalitat will organize a training day to 'introduce the application to users and owners of tourist-use homes.' The event is scheduled for January 27, to showcase 'improvements in internal management through new functionalities,' advanced Councillor Marián Cano.

Among the improvements, the reduction of processing times for files stands out. Likewise, the most substantial change comes from the new design of the tourist business management application (GESTURNET) and its integration into the Mart-e processing platform.

Marian Cano recalled that, alongside regulatory and technological changes, the Directorate General of Tourism has made 'a great educational effort' over the past months to update and complete the data of the Valencian Community's Tourist Housing Register. To this end, more than 1,400 housing management companies and 22,000 housing owners have been contacted to achieve a substantial improvement in the data.

She also indicated that 'in 2025, with the launch of this new technological platform of the Register, we will continue to work massively on its purification. It should be remembered that it grew uncontrollably during the eight years of the Botànic Government, with an increase of more than 160%.'
