Owners of the stalls that have shaped the 'hippies' at the Esplanade for 45 years are changing roles. They transition from selling products to becoming security guards. The association has terminated the security service contract, and they will assume this role from Thursday.
This craft market located on the tessellated promenade of the Esplanade of Alicante is now history. The stalls have closed, with Wednesday being the last day sales were permitted. Traders must dismantle the stalls over the coming weeks, before January 31.
From Thursday, the owners will process their employees' terminations with Social Security. This is also when the security service contract, which ensures safety during the night and commercial closing hours, has ended.

Therefore, during these dismantling days, traders will take on the role of security guards. They have established surveillance patrols, consisting of about four people, to prevent anyone from "opening or climbing onto the stalls," explains the association's president, Lucía Ramello.
The goods remain stored inside the 'hippies' stalls because "we haven't lost hope." The president of the Esplanade vendors' association emphasizes that "we are not going to empty them for now," as the owners of the 30 stalls "are waiting to be relocated elsewhere or allowed to stay here, depending on the City Council's decision."

For now, the stalls will remain standing at least until this Sunday when the 'hippies' have called for a midday demonstration to "see if we achieve something," whether it's relocation to another part of the city or a new extension for selling at the Esplanade. If the situation remains unchanged as of Thursday, in uncertainty, as they point out, "we will have to come up with something."
The demonstration is joined by actions initiated during this first day without public sales. The 'hippies' traders of the Esplanade of Alicante have sealed the stalls with tape as a sign of criticism and protest.
The tapes are accompanied by posters displaying messages such as "they promised us relocation, not eviction," the number of families that will face unemployment, their goal of "we just want to work," and information and details about the demonstration scheduled for this Sunday, January 19.
Until that date, the 'hippies' of the Esplanade will remain in front of their stalls, carrying out surveillance duties, thus continuing a task that "brings life and light" to the promenade, as explained by Juana, one of the owners. "It's an ideal place that has been cleaned of crime, drug addiction, and prostitution with the market."
