Supermarkets Open in Alicante During Santa Faz 2025: Opening Hours and Closures Due to May 1st Holiday

Alicante is gearing up to celebrate one of its most iconic festivals, the Santa Faz pilgrimage, which will gather over 300,000 people on its traditional route from the Town Hall square to the monastery housing the relic. Avenida de Dénia will be closed to traffic to allow pilgrims to pass. As tradition dictates, after the walk comes the anticipated "esmorzar" in the green areas of the hamlet. Many Alicante residents will use this day to share meals with family and friends. However, this year requires more planning as Santa Faz coincides with May 1st, Labour Day, a national holiday across Spain.

While it is customary for Santa Faz day to be a holiday in Alicante city, other municipalities do not always celebrate it, so supermarkets around the capital are usually available for last-minute shopping. However, this year, as it coincides with May 1st, a national holiday, most shopping centres will remain closed.

Although traditionally some supermarkets near Alicante remained open during this day, the coincidence with May 1st will greatly limit last-minute shopping options. Many relied on the Carrefour in San Juan for emergency purchases, but the holiday will keep this centre and many others closed.

El Corte Inglés shopping centres in Alicante will not open their doors on May 1st, Santa Faz day. The establishment, located on Avenida Maisonnave, will remain closed throughout the day.

Carrefour stores in the Plaza Mar 2, Puerta de Alicante, and Gran Vía shopping centres will close on Thursday, May 1st, in Alicante. However, the Carrefour Express stores in the city will open on the holiday from 9 am to 9 pm.

Additionally, this year, as Santa Faz coincides with Labour Day, which is a national holiday, other centres like San Juan will also remain closed, making last-minute shopping trips to another municipality impossible.

Alcampo stores will also not open on Santa Faz day. The establishments in Alicante and the province will close their doors on May 1st. Additionally, the Plaza Mar 2 shopping centre will also remain shuttered during this holiday.
