The Industrial Circle of Alcoi was the venue for the presentation of the report on Friday, outlining the construction of a railway line connecting the capital of L'Alcoià with Alicante. This route would integrate the province internally by also linking it with Valencia, serving two million residents.
Thirty-five years ago, freight services on the Alcoi-Xátiva train line were discontinued, leading to increased costs in time, money, and environmental impact for local businesses, as they have to resort to road transport. Additionally, it is not competitive for passengers travelling to or from Alicante.
Now, the report, commissioned by the LHIA-Alcoy Industrial Association and prepared by the engineering firm Vielca, offers several route alternatives. Starting from Alcoi, the first would pass through Xixona; the second through Ibi, Tibi, and Agost; the third through Ibi, Castalla, and Agost; and a final option crossing Ibi, Castalla, and Villena.
As explained by Vielca's representatives, the selection of the most favourable route will consider factors such as service functionality, environmental impact, and territorial effects, among others. These routes range from 43.9 to 55.5 kilometres.
The event was attended by the President of the Generalitat, Carlos Mazón; the President of the Provincial Council, Toni Pérez; and the Mayor of Alcoi, Toni Francés, among other authorities.
Mazón highlighted the "total commitment" of the Generalitat to the railway project connecting the city with Alicante, as well as the expansion of industrial land to "make industrial growth a reality." In his speech, he noted that a further step is being taken towards the direct rail connection of Alcoy with Alicante, "an essential infrastructure for the future of the inland regions," while also emphasising the "unblocking of the strategic Alcoy Sur project" for industrial land development.
Meanwhile, Toni Pérez emphasised the institution's strong commitment to this project, "which responds to a historical demand dating back to the mid-19th century and is crucial for the current and future development of our province." The Provincial Council of Alicante has contributed 20,000 euros for the report's preparation.
