Rice dishes marking the end of winter, modern rice with pork trotter. Asparagus from Villena, broccoli from the Albanés family, and beans from Mutxamel will travel the world thanks to the new stamp created by the Philately Association celebrating Alicante as the National Gastronomic Capital.
Emotions such as sharing and remembering have inspired the stamp's design. These are sentiments that the City Council reminds us define the city. Nuria Lera, Director of Philately, highlighted this by recalling the grandmothers and mothers who have passed down the traditions and recipes that today shape our culture.
The Councillor for Tourism, Ana Poquet, stated that the image aims to showcase what Alicante is: "flavour of the sea, orchard, innovation, and tradition." Meanwhile, Mayor Luis Barcala emphasised that the stamp highlights the local product, which has been worked on for generations. It captures the roots of Alicante, those that give us identity and cultural richness.
Finally, Barcala expressed gratitude to the economic sector and the Postal Service for representing the image and culture of Alicante. "It allows us to keep forever the image that is closely linked to the city of Alicante," he concluded.
The Postal Service has already circulated over 95,000 stamps capturing the gastronomic essence of Alicante with one of its star dishes: rice. Additionally, it is larger than usual, measuring 57.6 x 40.9 millimetres compared to the typical 40.9 x 28.8 millimetres.
This stamp joins that of Juana Francés as the second stamp dedicated to the city of Alicante in just one year. Moreover, the province has featured in four of the 90 stamps issued annually.
