An amicable handball match between Handbol La Vila Joiosa and Handbol Sant Joan on September 6th at the IES LA Malladeta pavilion in La Vila Joiosa ended in the worst possible way. The family of a visiting team player, only 17 years old, reported one of the local players, aged 35, for punching him, causing multiple fractures to his nose and necessitating surgery a few days later.

It is noteworthy that the accused, David Moreno, is the spokesperson for Vox in the La Vila Joiosa town council.

According to Toni Cortés, father of the assaulted player, the family has already filed a complaint against Moreno to ensure "that person does not play anymore and cannot do this to anyone else." Cortés, who has "played handball for 20 years," believes such actions "tarnish a contact sport that is not violent" like handball.

According to Cortés's account, Moreno's aggression towards his son occurred without any prior provocation from the minor towards the local player. He states that his son "had come off the bench just a minute before" and that before receiving the punch "they had only made one attack and it was the first defense his son was making against that person."

In the video of the play, it can be seen how the minor and the Vox spokesperson in La Vila Joiosa struggle defensively in an action where, according to Cortés, "there is nothing but handball. He wins the position twice, and I believe it's the feeling of helplessness seeing a kid win the position."

It is then when, as seen in the video, Moreno first throws a kick and then an elbow without either landing on his opponent. It is right after this that he throws the punch that led to the family's complaint. The father recalls the incident by explaining, "When I saw him throw the kick, I approached the court side without stepping onto it to ask him to calm down. When he punched him, my son went for the ball; he didn't even confront him and he took advantage to hit him in the face."

Following this episode which could have been considered an overly heated moment of the game if it had ended there, Vox's spokesperson in La Vila Joiosa continued with his defiant attitude towards other family members of the Handbol Sant Joan player.

Specifically, according to Toni Cortés, Moreno "threatened to kill" his brother (the assaulted player's uncle) when he asked for explanations about what had happened. "My brother approached him but instead of punching him in the face, he pushed him."

The father tries to understand what happened as a product of a contact sport's intensity, emphasizing that "in such scuffles, you might push or get rude. But when you punch someone in the face, you intend to hurt," lamenting "the excessive violence with which he tried to harm a 17-year-old boy."

This continued shortly after when Moreno "went looking for my brother in the stands and told him he was going to ruin his life and many other things."

The assaulted player is now "quite well" after being "quite unwell last week because of surgery but now has an unswollen nose and is back to normal life."

Toni Cortés stated that since the day of the match neither he nor any family member has had contact with David Moreno or anyone from his circle but appreciates that "both La Vila Joiosa’s coach and several players have been asking about my son's condition through our coach. I have to thank them because they behaved very well at that moment too."
