More than 100 additional workers and a door-to-door waste collection service for barracas and racós. These are the foundations of the cleaning operation coordinated by the Alicante City Council and the concessionaire company, Netial, for the Hogueras festival.

The additional resources will be activated on June 15 and will continue until the 30th of the same month, as announced by the municipal government this Wednesday. The aim: to keep the city's streets and beaches clean during these days of intense activity.

The plan has been designed in collaboration with the Federation of Hogueras, as emphasized by the Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Street Cleaning and Waste Management, Manuel Villar: "The City Council and Netial have tackled the operation with the cooperation agreement with the Federation, which yielded excellent results last year, through Netial's coordination of cleaning and waste collection from the various barracas and racós, to present an even better image of the city during a time when thousands of visitors come to enjoy Alicante."

The door-to-door collection service for racós and barracas is set from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. throughout the city centre and also in 22 other fogueril sites distributed across the neighbourhoods, specifically in 14 locations, according to municipal sources. At the same time, establishments are provided with 1,100-litre rear-loading containers, personalized with the owner's name.

These containers must remain inside the festive premises and not on the public road, where they can only be placed for the minimum time necessary for collection at the establishment's door. The City Council adds that those who do not use these containers will have to use selective collection bags and others that ensure watertightness.

The 'door-to-door' service will be completed in three daily shifts from June 19 to 25, from 4:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. In parallel, a visit from Netial's team of educators will inform about the waste collection schedule or specific requirements of each area, depending on whether they are within the traffic-restricted perimeter or outside it (between June 18-20), according to the same sources.

Most frequented areas

In anticipation of crowds in the city centre, a special cleaning of this district has been arranged with eight specialized teams. Depending on each space, manual sweeping workers will intervene, and blowers, sweeper-blower equipment, or washing and press trucks, pressure washers, and collection trucks will be used, along with the new dual washing equipment. These services will start at 5:00 a.m., while a review will be carried out at 12:00 p.m.

On the other hand, the start of garbage collection is changed from 12:00 a.m. to 4:00 a.m. for operational reasons, as well as to address possible incidents detected on the public road, according to the Department of Cleaning. Additionally, a team will respond to unforeseen events in the morning, afternoon, and night.

The Night of San Juan

On the night of the 23rd, San Juan's night, a team consisting of five trucks and five shovels and a reinforcement of 30 workers will be deployed. For the following night, the Nit de Cremà, 113 workers and 52 vehicles will be available to handle the collection of bonfires and barracas. There will be 36 trucks and 15 shovels.

The City Council has planned a washing reinforcement in the neighbourhoods from the 26th to the 30th to restore normality as soon as possible, according to municipal sources.

Beach service

Regarding cleaning, the summer season on Alicante's beaches will start on June 18 with an additional operation to the regular service, consisting of 28 workers. It will operate until the end of the summer season, aiming to ensure "the sand is pristine daily for bathers, without traces of the previous night's festivities."

As a preventive measure to improve the city's cleanliness, and as it is a punishable conduct under the new municipal ordinance, the government team will install public toilets and urinals in areas considered problematic. It insists that urinating in public implies a €300 fine.
