The Spanish automotive sector, encompassing manufacturing, sales, and repair of vehicles, concluded 2024 with a total of 2.21 million jobs, marking a reduction of 155,300 positions compared to the previous year, according to the latest Active Population Survey (EPA).
This represents a 6.55% decline in employment volume compared to the 2.36 million jobs at the end of 2023.
According to the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC), the automotive industry as a whole (manufacturers and components) accounts for 10% of Spain's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Additionally, it is responsible for 18% of total employment in Spain, making it a key sector for the country's economy.
Official data from this organization shows that car sales in 2024 reached a total of 1,016,885 units, a 7.1% increase from the previous year. This figure surpasses the one million unit mark for the first time in four consecutive years, a milestone not achieved since before the pandemic.
By activity branches, in 2024, the vehicle manufacturing industry in Spain employed 876,700 people, representing a 4.27% decrease compared to the same period the previous year, with approximately 39,200 fewer jobs.
The sale and repair of vehicles ended the year with 1.33 million jobs, 116,100 fewer than the previous year, reflecting a 7.98% year-on-year decline.
According to EPA data, employment levels in the automotive sector in 2024 were 2.24% lower than in 2019, the pre-pandemic year, when 2.26 million jobs were recorded.
On a positive note, the Spanish automotive sector saw a 7.44% increase in the number of workers in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the previous quarter, adding 39,300 workers.
By branches, the motor vehicle, trailer, and semi-trailer manufacturing industry in Spain saw a reduction of 7,300 jobs in the fourth quarter of last year compared to the same period the previous year, closing with 224,700 employees.
However, the vehicle manufacturing activity in Spain in the last three months of the year saw a 9.66% quarter-on-quarter increase in employment volume, translating to 19,800 new jobs.
A similar trend occurred in the motor vehicle and motorcycle sales and repair sector, which reduced its workforce by 13,500 in the fourth quarter of 2024 compared to the last three months of 2023. However, compared to the third quarter of last year, it gained 19,500 new workers.
Compared to pre-pandemic figures, the automotive sector closed the fourth quarter of the year with 900 more jobs (+0.15%) than those recorded in the same period of 2019.
