The Alicante Socialist Municipal Group has proposed that the use of municipal sports facilities be free for residents registered in the city as well as for local clubs. The main opposition group revealed that residents of Alicante paid more than 600,000 euros in 2023 in fees for using the city's sports facilities.
"If we want to promote sports practice at all levels, we must facilitate access to public sports spaces without having to pay a fee. Residents of Alicante already pay their taxes to the City Council and should not have to pay to use sports spaces," highlighted councilor Eduardo Rodríguez.
The fees require a payment of 2.35 euros to access the athletics track; 3.70 euros for using a swimming pool; 39.50 euros for using a court in an indoor pavilion; or 35.80 euros for playing a match on an artificial turf football field. "It is unacceptable that the municipal coffers are full because Barcala does not execute the committed investments while imposing fees for using sports centers," added the councilor.
The proposal by the Socialist Municipal Group for free use of municipal sports facilities will be debated in the plenary session next Thursday. Specifically, the registered initiative consists of urging the Finance Department to carry out the necessary procedures to establish a 100% discount on the public price for using municipal sports facilities, making them free both for sports clubs and for all residents registered in our city.
In this line, the plenary initiative includes that once this 100% discount is approved, the City Council will notify this agreement so that clubs can pass on these savings to their members or families. This will achieve significant savings for family economies and also promote sports practice at all levels.
