The 'Smart Costa Blanca 2.0' project has been selected by the European Union to receive NextGeneration funds amounting to €1.2 million. The initiative, designed by the Provincial Tourism Board, aims to enhance tourism integration and efficiency in the province, improve accessibility and sustainability, generate a positive impact on attracting travelers and managing natural resources, and create employment and business opportunities in the sector.
This initiative is part of the call for grants for the deployment of technological platforms and digital solutions in the DTI Network destinations. It is a plan that particularly focuses on sustainability and is intended to continue 'Our Plan Costa Blanca 2024' and the 'Smart Costa Blanca' project funded by Red.es.
According to Toni Pérez, President of the Alicante Provincial Council and the Costa Blanca Board, the 'Smart Costa Blanca 2.0' project is proposed as an initiative that will continue the digital transformation initiated in the province, expanding its reach and connecting its intelligent platform with the PID Central Node and other intelligent destination platforms in the region. This will allow, as he specified, "to continue promoting our participation in a true provincial tourism interoperability network."
The president emphasized that the conversion into an intelligent tourist destination "involves integration within the DTI networks, as this achieves synergy of all tools and models between administrations and ensures continuity of the digital transformation initiated in the province."
Some of the most representative actions included in this plan focus on the expansion and interoperability of the 'Smart Costa Blanca' base platform, to serve the entire province and include new functionalities, as well as the integration of data from multiple databases and data sources, establishing data governance for tourism analysis and management.
It also includes the implementation of common and optional modules to improve the platform's functionality and positively impact the efficiency and suitability of tourism management in the province, the development of specific functionalities for the integration of an efficient and sustainable water resource management platform, and the improvement of the availability of universally accessible tourism services and products or the digitization of tourism publications and the development of an efficient communication strategy.
Additionally, it foresees the creation of a provincial tourism intelligence system, integrating data capture sensors from Alicante municipalities to obtain a large volume of useful real-time data and reduce costs.
Toni Pérez assured that the Alicante tourism sector "is crucial for our economy, so the 'Smart Costa Blanca 2.0' project becomes a comprehensive initiative that seeks to revitalize and modernize it, aligning with European and national strategies for sustainable and digitized tourism."
Meanwhile, José Mancebo, Director of the Costa Blanca Board, acknowledged that, in terms of impact, "the project will strengthen integration and efficiency in tourism management, improve accessibility and sustainability, and generate attraction of tourists, natural resources, and the creation of employment and business opportunities in the sector."
The tourism official assured that, to achieve these objectives, "a specialized team composed of personnel from the Alicante Provincial Council and the Costa Blanca Board, in collaboration with a Technical Management and Coordination Office and other technological providers, experts in digital transformation and tourism technology, will carry out the technological development of the proposal."
'Smart Costa Blanca 2.0' aligns with the objectives of the call for grants for the deployment of technological platforms and digital solutions in DTI Network destinations and many other strategic documents linked to the sustainable and digital transition of the Spanish tourism sector.
"The project, therefore, is a comprehensive initiative that seeks to revitalize and modernize the tourism sector of our province, aligning with European and national strategies for sustainable and digitized tourism," Mancebo stated.
The Alicante Provincial Council has included in its project the development of two specific use cases aligned with the axes of accessibility, sustainability, and governance of the Intelligent Tourist Destination model.
On one hand, the universal accessibility line aims to address the issue of including these parameters in environments, products, and tourism services through the deployment of a specific functionality. This technological solution will be developed considering the analysis methodology, studying the initial situation of the province, and identifying reliable data bases and sources. An inventory of accessible resources and services will also be conducted, proposing inclusive routes and activities.
Furthermore, a proposal, evaluation, and participatory validation of the proposed data model will be included, inviting sessions with collaborating municipalities and agents responsible for tourism resources and services or associations linked to promoting accessibility and inclusion.
The plan also foresees the development and accessible visualization of the data model, digitizing an intuitive and interactive Guide on Accessible Tourism in the province, and creating an interactive map of the location of tourism resources and services in the Costa Blanca that allows filtering content on parking, beaches, activities, accommodations, or hospitality, among others.
On the other hand, the water cycle case, following a methodology that deploys a solution in semi-arid and densely populated regions, such as the province of Alicante, where pressure on water resources has historically been high.
The development of tourism and the increase in extreme weather events have contributed to increasing this pressure, making water a key factor for achieving water sustainability in the territory. To this end, the real-time data integration system (API) will be analyzed, a data platform will be designed, and visualization of graphs and maps of the state of water resources, the network of meteorological stations, the location and status of water sites, the efficiency of potable water distribution, or consumption forecasts using artificial intelligence models and historical data analysis will be carried out.
Finally, secure infrastructure and services for sensor reinforcement will be enhanced, and pilot tests, validation, adjustments, and improvements will be carried out.
President Toni Pérez expressed gratitude to the Water Cycle area for their collaboration in this section and their involvement in optimizing water-related resources in the province.
This call also plans collaborations with other local entities to leverage economies of scale in the development and sharing of modules and functionalities, generating synergies and optimizing public resources.
