The 30-year-old man who died yesterday afternoon after being shot by an officer when he rammed his vehicle into an unmarked National Police car in a street in the Madrid district of El Pilar was carrying several kilograms of cocaine, according to investigation sources.
Due to this and his multiple drug trafficking and other criminal records, he attempted to flee from the unmarked police car, which, as part of a surveillance operation, stopped him at 1:50 PM on Wednesday on Sinesio Delgado Street in the Fuencarral-El Pardo district.
Specifically, the vehicle from the Drug and Organized Crime Units (UDYCO), with two plainclothes officers inside, overtook him intending to make him stop. However, this individual, driving a white Seat León, rammed them.
On several occasions, the officers ordered him to stop. But as the alleged trafficker ignored their commands and tried to push them off the avenue, one of the officers fired a shot, hitting him in the chest, and the car ended up on the sidewalk.
Samur-Civil Protection paramedics arrived at the scene, attended to the man, and transported him to La Paz Hospital in Madrid, where he died after 4:00 PM from a gunshot wound to the lung. The officers were unharmed, while the patrol car sustained damage.
The location where the incident occurred, at the intersection with Finisterre Street, was closed to traffic, and Scientific Police officers arrived to analyze the situation. The Seat, which was not his property, was taken to police facilities, where several blocks of cocaine weighing about three kilograms and cash were discovered inside.
The deceased was a Spanish citizen of Colombian origin, slim, with dark skin and multiple tattoos. He was a 'dangerous' person with a record for drug trafficking, according to the same sources.
The Homicide Group of the Superior Police Headquarters has taken over the investigation, which will be judicialized. They have already taken statements from the acting officers, will analyze the area's security cameras, and will speak with witnesses to the incident, in addition to examining the evidence.
