According to the study, which the Spanish Association of Automobile and Truck Manufacturers (ANFAC) prepares annually through sector reports, a total of 4.97 million vehicles were transported during 2023 through road, rail, and sea transport services, representing an 8.3% increase compared to the previous year.
This slight improvement is associated with vehicle production in 2023 (+10.4%), which has favored export flows. Maritime transport accounts for 55% of the total vehicles transported and increases its share by 6.6 percentage points compared to 2022.
According to the report on the Valuation of vehicle logistics by road, in 2023 a total of 1,579,367 vehicles were moved by road, representing a 12.9% drop compared to 2022, being the lowest figure recorded since 2014.
This figure has been mainly affected by the reduction of available fleets associated with the aging of fleets and the lack of drivers, but also by the recovery of rail transport once flows were normalized.
The report on the Valuation of rail transport logistics closed this edition with an increase in vehicle transport through the rail system for the second consecutive year, growing by 17.9%, being responsible for transporting 657,477 vehicles. This growth has been possible thanks to the improvement in the internal transport of vehicles (+26.9%) as it is primarily used to bring vehicles produced in Spain closer to the ports from where they are subsequently exported by sea.
In contrast, the transport of components by train fell by 29.7% in 2023 compared to 2022, with this drop mainly coming from international transport (-57.5%), although domestic traffic was also affected (-5.5%).
In the 2023 edition of the sector report on the Valuation of maritime-port logistics, an increase in vehicle movements through maritime services was recorded, with a 23.1% increase and a volume of 2.74 million vehicles. In this way, growth continues for the second consecutive year.
Of the total vehicle traffic in merchandise regime that passed through the ports throughout 2023 —according to data from Puertos del Estado— this report focuses on analyzing the eight main ports for the import and export of vehicles, responsible for 2.74 million of the vehicles moved by this route (55% of the total). For this, the evaluation made by companies associated with ANFAC on the logistical services of the ports of Barcelona, Málaga, Pasaia, Sagunto, Santander, Tarragona, Valencia, and Vigo has been collected.
In 2023, the port of Tarragona leads the port valuation ranking with a score of 4.5 out of 5, followed by Santander and Sagunto, which share the second and third positions with scores of 4.4 and 4.2, respectively. The ports of Tarragona, Valencia, and Vigo are the only three that improve their score compared to 2022. The average valuation of Spanish ports remains the same, with an overall score of 3.9 out of 5, reflecting that it is still hampered by port congestion, although at a lower level than in previous years.
Of the indicators analyzed, the aspects best valued by the brands are those related to customs procedures, the loading and unloading of trucks, and other incidents (4.3 out of 5), followed by road accessibility and vehicle handling in storage areas, with a score of 4.1 out of 5.
Additionally, manufacturers have highlighted some aspects that have improved significantly, such as the perception of the proactivity of the authorities, as well as the improvement in port accessibility, both by road and rail.
