Esquerra Unida has condemned "the lack of action" by Alicante City Council regarding a sewage spill "that has remained uncleaned since January 5th on the slopes of Santa Bárbara Castle," one of the city's most touristic areas, as stated by this political group in a press release.
"Despite having alerted municipal authorities on several occasions and held meetings with City Council officials, the only response received was a visit to the site without any subsequent action to resolve the issue," EU representatives stated.
In response to this situation, over the weekend, a group of local residents, equipped with gloves, shovels, rakes, and garbage bags, "felt compelled to carry out cleaning tasks in the affected area." According to EU, "the area was littered with sewage remnants, toilet paper, wipes, and other waste, posing a serious health hazard and presenting a deplorable image for such a popular site."
Esquerra Unida demands that the City Council "take responsibility and act urgently to ensure the cleanliness and maintenance of all Alicante neighborhoods," including Raval Roig, "where such issues highlight a concerning neglect by the Council."
