Sevilla became the sixth top division team to be eliminated from the Copa del Rey on Saturday, falling to Segunda Division leaders Almería. After trailing 0-1 at halftime, Almería mounted a comeback to defeat the five-time tournament champions 4-1 in the round of 32.
The team from Seville joined Mallorca (the current Copa runner-up), Espanyol, Villarreal, Girona, and Alavés in being defeated at the Estadio de los Juegos Mediterráneos. Almería turned the match around in five minutes at the start of the second half, ultimately securing a resounding victory and sealing Sevilla's Copa del Rey failure.
Segunda Division's top scorer, Colombian Luis Suárez, scored a hat-trick to knock out Sevilla and propel Almería into the round of 16, with the draw set for next Wednesday. Isaac Romero put Sevilla ahead in the 5th minute, but in the second half, Rubi's team overwhelmed García Pimienta's side. Milovanovic scored the first goal in the 49th minute, followed by three from Luis Suárez (54', 77', and a penalty in the 96th minute). The Colombian striker, who has scored 19 goals this season (16 in the league and three in the Copa), was the standout player in the Andalusian Copa derby, which concluded in added time with a penalty he himself won and converted.
Sevilla, seven points above the relegation zone in La Liga, must now focus on the domestic competition for the remainder of the season after suffering an unexpected setback in Almería. They had previously overcome Las Rozas (0-3) and Olot (1-3). Almería defeated San Sebastián de los Reyes and Cultural Leonesa, both by 1-2, in earlier rounds before causing the second major upset of the round of 32, following Mallorca's elimination by Segunda RFEF's Pontevedra the previous day.
