A 56-year-old man was severely injured on Sunday when the fryer he was using exploded in a churrería in the city of Albacete. The workplace accident occurred shortly after ten in the morning when several customers were already having breakfast at the establishment, Churrería Álvarez, located on Laurel Street.

For reasons currently under investigation, the fryer, which was filled with oil, exploded, causing burns all over the worker's body and injuring three other people. The most seriously injured individual was evacuated in a mobile ICU to the nearby Albacete General University Hospital, located less than 500 meters from the churrería. Given the severity of the injuries, a medical helicopter was required to transfer the intubated victim to the Burns Unit at the University and Polytechnic Hospital La Fe in Valencia, which has been accredited as a Reference Unit of the National Health System since 2008.

As for the other three injured individuals, they were able to make their way to the Albacete hospital for evaluation. The churrería was also attended by officers from the National Police and Local Police, as well as firefighters from the Albacete municipal park, who extinguished the fire caused by the fryer explosion. The affected premises had been renovated two years ago to serve meals in addition to breakfasts.
