The Criminal Court No. 3 of Vigo has sentenced a man to one year and eight months in prison for drowning his girlfriend's dog in a mop bucket after an argument, resulting in the animal's death.
Thus, the judge found him guilty of a crime against a domestic animal, sentencing him to one year and eight months in prison, as well as three and a half years of special disqualification from any profession, trade, or business related to animals and from owning animals.
Additionally, in terms of civil liability, the man must compensate the woman with 5,000 euros for the moral damage caused, the value of the animal, and the costs of its autopsy.
According to the proven facts of the judgment, the incident occurred on the night of June 10, 2023, when the accused went to pick up his then-partner from work. At some point, an argument broke out between them, which continued when they arrived at the home they shared.
There, when she went to her bedroom, the boyfriend, "with the intention of undermining the integrity and life" of the animal, grabbed it and held the dog's head submerged in the water of a mop bucket in the living room.
When the woman caught him, she pulled the dog out of the water and tried to revive it, but the animal died. The accused, on his part, said: "one less problem."
For all these reasons, he was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison. Nevertheless, the sentence can be appealed before the Provincial Court of Pontevedra.
