Personal data of the owners and drivers of over 800,000 electric vehicles from Volkswagen, Seat, Audi, and Skoda have been exposed due to a security breach in the Cariad software division, established in 2019.
As revealed by the German newspaper 'Der Spiegel', the GPS positioning data of drivers have been leaked, accessible to a large number of people who could access, among other information, the locations where each car has been, at what time, and how long the parking lasted.
Additionally, further information about the state of the vehicles' batteries or whether the car had undergone inspections at authorised centres was collected.
Thus, the routine of hundreds of thousands of people driving the group's 'zero-emission' cars has been exposed to hackers.
The origin of this security crisis in Volkswagen models, according to local information consulted by Europa Press, lies in a system update sent remotely last summer. This update included the collection of driving-related data during each trip, which was subsequently uploaded to the cloud to enhance customer experience. The breach has affected models of the group's brands across Europe.
According to 'Der Spiegel's investigation, politicians, businesspeople, and even the Hamburg police have been affected by this security breach, as well as alleged employees of the German intelligence services. The data, including the names of vehicle owners or fleet managers, have been publicly accessible for months.
