Section speed cameras are traffic control systems designed to measure the average speed of vehicles over a specific stretch of road, rather than at a single point like traditional speed cameras.
Their operation is based on the installation of cameras and sensors at least two strategic points along the road, separated by a certain distance. These cameras are connected to a system that records vehicle number plates as they enter and exit the controlled section.
With these devices, the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) monitors the speed at which vehicles travel over a specific section, usually on roads with a high concentration of accidents, to prevent such incidents.
The section speed camera uses license plate recognition technology to identify each vehicle and calculate the time it takes to travel the distance between the two points.
This time is compared with the speed limit set for that section; if the vehicle completes the journey in less time than allowed, it means the speed limit has been exceeded, and a penalty is automatically issued.
Since 2010, the DGT has installed several of these cameras at strategic points. One of the latest additions is currently being tested on the M-505 in Madrid, and its arrival has not been without controversy.
This conventional road begins in Las Rozas and stretches over 48 kilometres, almost reaching the border with the province of Ávila. The new section speed camera, which has caused some discontent, covers from kilometre 9 to 12.300, within the municipality of Galapagar.
From the town hall of this Madrid locality, a statement has been issued announcing that they have requested a meeting with the DGT to review the installation of the device.
"Responding to the request of numerous residents and complaints received about the reduced speed limit, the mayor of Galapagar has requested a meeting with the Director-General of the DGT, Pere Navarro, to understand in detail the reasons behind this decision and consider the possibility of modifying this limit so that this speed camera serves its purpose of reducing vehicle and motorcycle speed without hindering traffic," they explained.
The speed limit set for the section is 50 km/h as it is a problematic area with a concentration of accidents; however, the council believes it may be a counterproductive measure.
For now, the speed camera is in the testing phase, although signs warning of the measurement are already in place, encouraging drivers to comply with the regulations.
Speeding fines can range from minor to very serious and may result in the loss of points.
If you drive between 51 and 70: 100 euros. No points lost.
If you drive between 71 and 80: 300 euros and 2 points.
If you drive between 81 and 90: 400 euros and 4 points.
If you drive between 91 and 100: 500 euros and 6 points.
If you drive 101 and above: 600 euros and 6 points.
All fines can be reduced by 50% if paid promptly after the penalty is issued.
