On Friday, February 14th, European Sexual Health Day is commemorated, an occasion seized by the Alicante Nursing College to make a statement. Specifically, one concerning school nurses, a role implemented by the Health Department for this academic year. According to the Alicante college, these professionals are essential for maintaining healthy sexual habits in the population and thereby reducing the levels of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

The entity asserts that, often, STIs "are hidden due to fear or shame, enjoying a healthy and active sexuality in old age and the need to seek professional help when experiencing sexual health issues are some of the areas where these professionals can assist."

WHO's Stance

They recall that the World Health Organization (WHO) defines sexual health as "a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being related to sexuality; it is not merely the absence of disease, dysfunction, or infirmity" and adds that "it requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of coercion, discrimination, and violence."

"Topics related to sexual health such as the prevention of unwanted pregnancies, the use of contraceptive methods, and the fight against STIs should be part of a comprehensive education for both our youth and the general population," states Noelia Rodríguez Blanco, Fourth Vocal of the Alicante Nursing College.

Additionally, she adds that School Nursing and midwives "also contribute to the fight against other social issues such as discrimination and gender violence, thanks to active measures of awareness and sensitization against discrimination based on sexual orientation and to ensure effective teaching of sexual diversity."
