Sant Joan Hospital has become the first in Alicante province to receive accreditation in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, enabling it to train doctors in this specialty under the Medical Intern Resident (MIR) programme. This accreditation is part of nearly 50 training positions offered by the hospital in fields including Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, and Hospital Radiophysics.

Fernando Valiente, head of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery service, highlighted, "Sant Joan d'Alacant Hospital is a reference centre for treating complex cases from across Alicante province and even other regions." He added, "We have been receiving residents from other communities such as Madrid, Barcelona, Aragón, and Castilla La Mancha, who choose to rotate here to enhance their training in advanced techniques like microsurgery, arthroscopy, and endoscopic joint surgery."

"We will train specialists in Alicante to meet the healthcare needs of the population, applying the high technical and professional standards available at our centre," Valiente emphasised.

Open Doors for Residents

The hospital, offering 49 training positions this year across Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Psychology, and Hospital Radiophysics, recently hosted its "IX Open Doors Day for Residents". During the event, which was also streamed online, the manager of the Alicante-Sant Joan d'Alacant Health Department provided an overview of daily operations at the hospital and its nine associated health centres.

"We offer high-quality training tailored to each resident's needs, fostering close professional relationships in an exceptional learning environment," he stated.

Ruth Cañizares, head of studies, noted, "We have been training specialists for 31 years, focusing on patient-centred medicine and providing top-quality care, both technically and humanely, through personalised training without overcrowding."

The event also featured contributions from Antonio Compañ, Dean of the UMH Faculty of Medicine and Head of Surgery at Sant Joan Hospital, and Domingo Orozco, Head of the Research Unit at Sant Joan and Vice-Rector of UMH. Following brief presentations by current residents from various specialties, attendees toured the hospital in groups according to their interests.
