Samu Omorodion is a weapon of mass destruction. The Nigerian-born striker led the Spanish under-21 team's thrashing of Malta with a first-half poker on Tuesday. The forward, sold by Atlético to Porto in the last summer market, scored his first goal in the 5th minute. He received a cross from Javi Guerra, controlled it at first touch, and shot past the Malta goalkeeper to put La Rojita ahead in a match irrelevant in qualifying terms, as the team led by Santi Denia had already secured their ticket to next year's European Championship in Slovakia after defeating Hungary on September 10 with a goal from Robert Navarro. It was just the beginning of the 'show' completed by the new star of the 'Dragoes'.
It took Samu Omorodion thirty-two minutes to score his second goal against Malta. This time it was Sevilla's Carmona who delivered a cross that the striker, after outplaying Xerri, used to widen the gap. From that moment, he went into overdrive and devoured Malta. The third came in the 39th minute with a sharp shot to the far post. And on the brink of halftime, he scored the fourth by heading at the far post a ball from a corner kick previously touched by Hujsen.
After Sevilla's Peque sealed the 5-0 for Spain in the second half, Santi Denia decided to substitute Samu Omorodion to bring on Raúl Moro and allow the Porto 'killer' to receive the applause of the crowd gathered at the Estadio Nuevo Mirador in Algeciras, where La Rojita concluded the qualifying phase for the European Championship in Slovakia in style. With Samu already watching his teammates' progress from the bench, Roberto Fernández made it 6-0 on the scoreboard of a match with which Omorodion once again knocks on the doors of the senior team.
His absence from Spain's squad for the matches against Denmark and Serbia, corresponding to the Nations League, was already one of the highlights in the press conference that Luis de la Fuente gave after announcing the squad for this October break. "Samu is on our radar. He has a great future in Spanish football. He was not selected, but he could have been, but then you would have asked me about the one who is not here. We value him highly," said the national coach, who had included him in the preliminary list due to the extraordinary performance that the former Granada and Alavés player is showing with Porto and the under-21 team.
The striker is one of the great sensations of the season so far. He landed at Porto after his planned move to Chelsea fell through due to a medical examination. The 'Dragoes' paid 15 million euros for his services to Atlético, who had tried to include him in the deal that brought Conor Gallagher to the Metropolitano, and since then he has not stopped scoring goals.
He has scored seven in as many matches with Porto - four in the Portuguese league and three in the Europa League - plus the four goals he scored on Tuesday with La Rojita. This last poker was a fitting response to the challenge posed by the competition from Mateo Joseph, who had benched him last Thursday against Kazakhstan, a match in which the Leeds striker scored a hat-trick. The goal-scoring battle between both players delights Santi Denia.
