RTVE's president, José Pablo López, has sparked a new controversy in the Spanish and Eurovision communities by questioning Israel's participation in the Eurovision Song Contest. In response to calls from cultural sectors and political parties like Podemos to suspend Israel's involvement, López has sent a letter to the general director of the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) urging an internal debate.
Specifically, López has requested Noel Curran to "initiate a debate within the organisation" regarding the participation of Israel's public broadcaster (KAN) in the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest, scheduled for 17 May in the city of Basel.
